The station started life in 1952 as a construction site and became operational as a 'Rotor' Radar Station in 1953. The technical site at Holmpton housed an R3 bunker comprising some 30,000sq ft of space set about 100ft below ground with the associated radars located directly above the bunker on a 36 acre secure site. RAF Holmpton offers public tours and an exhibition depicting over 50 years service of this major UK command centre. The exhibiton covers the first 25 years of radar, the subsequent use of the site for RAF Support Command and its current use today. Note: the bunker is currently closed to the public and will reopen in March 2016.
